Automotive welding for beginners | What you need to know
Rust and cracks in the automatic panel can be easily repaired, but the repair is often overlooked. They consider it expensive or spend a lot of time. However, with the right tools and guidelines, this can be a very simple process. Welding can seem scary, and many professional technicians and DIY enthusiasts avoid it. But this should not be a challenge. Technology has improved and now everyone can learn the basics.

This does not mean that you will learn overnight - good welding takes a lot of practice to be perfect. But you should never avoid or ignore this.

If you have to weld

Welding is particularly useful for large body and structural work. As a car owner, you may have encountered some of these issues: broken panels, rust stains, or damage to body tires. You may have found a broken chassis, a broken muffler, or a rusty oil pan. This repair can easily be done with a MIG welder and little knowledge.

You save time and money by fixing the problem yourself instead of replacing the entire section.

Welding gives you more control over your repair process. You can do more complicated tasks and projects. This skill must be learned for restoring classic cars. If your project has rusted, fix it instead of replacing the control panel. Repairing a leaky sump with ingredients you already have will save time, money and ingredients for each job.

Types of welding and what is best for automotive sheet metal
There are several main types of welding that can be used in auto repair. Let's look at three, but the last will be the most important to learn.
TIG is the abbreviation for Wolfram Tungsten Inert Gas (also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or GTAW). Tungsten is used for the electrodes that produce the arc welding. It is generally not the best learning type for beginners, but can be very good for very good projects. Filler metal is generally used to create a combination of the parts you combine. In this case, two hands are required - one for the welding nozzle and one for the filler. In addition, the shielding gas is pumped through the nozzle to keep the arc stable and strong.

Welding rods, also known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding or SMAW, were once the most common form of welding. Additional metals such as TIG are also used. But not exactly that. High heat from the bar welder makes this process unsuitable for thin metals. This is also ugly and leaves a lot of splashes. This is good for construction, but nothing in a car.

MIG or “Metal Inert Gas” (also known as “Gas Metal Arc Welding” or GMAW) welding also uses screens and gas charges. In this case, however, the load is a wire that passes directly through a welder. This makes it a one-handed process. This allows you to leave the other side free to handle other materials and tools. MIG welding is faster than most other welding methods. It's not as accurate as TIG, but it's still relatively clean. It is also much easier to learn and can be a great place to start learning.

MIG will be the type of direct welding for most body repairs. It works best because it is suitable for many types of metals and suitable for quick repairs. It can handle a wider range of thicknesses than TIG or Stick. MIG can manipulate the materials used in the body without losing strength or looking clean.

The new MIG welding machines also have many options to easily avoid deformation. It is also one of the easiest processes to learn. For experienced veterans and new welders, this is the best choice for auto repair. MIG welders are by far the beginners in welding technology because of their simplicity and ease of use.

What type of tools do you need?

There are several tools you need for welding. Some of them have already appeared, but I'll give you a few examples to find out what you need to get started.

The welder is the first and most important part of your welding tool. Many companies offer MIG welders with presets to get the right voltage, gas, and temperature for each project. This facilitates immediate use. These tools have the knowledge to hold your hand while you study.

It's a big investment (although less than a TIG machine), but choosing the right MIG welder means you will invest more than just a "beginner" tool. He is also the one who excels even when you are at the point of mastering the skills.

To run your MIG welder during a project, you will need some consumables that you want to keep. There is nothing worse than doubling the time of your project because you need to run out of inventory!

One of them is the filler wire. The type of wire you want will depend on the metal you are working for. It comes in a variety of materials and weights. Match the wire with the base metal.

The gas shield is also important. A gas composed of 25% CO2 and 75% argon will cover most welding projects. But look at the different options to see how they will affect your welding process

There are also other tools that will be of great help to you when correcting parts of your project. You may already have most if not all. All of this will not be necessary for every project, but this tool will be very useful to have around.
  • Angle grinder for cleaning weld seams
  • Pneumatic saws for the production of fine parts and for connection
  • Flight cut (clockwise and counterclockwise) to cut the patches
  • Lock the welding clamp to hold the metal in place while welding
  • Dolls for hammering metal or hot casting during and after welding
  • Metal night Hammer
  • Sheet metal meters that match your patch size and MIG settings

Spot welding drill is also useful. You can delete the previous weld spots when you unpack the patch you want to repair. They prevent excessive damage to good metals.

And finally and above all the safety equipment. Please do not try to weld without suitable protective equipment. You are not only endangering your health and well-being. At least you should:
  • Welding gloves
  • A layer of solder to prevent burns
  • A welding helmet to protect your face and especially your eyes from the strong light of arc welding

Some tips for automatic welding

If you have never welded before, practice practicing and destroying different types of welding. This helps you learn the technique and also shows common sense and resistance in the welds. Use scrap metal in different sizes to make you feel safe when you start driving.

When you're finally working with a real car, think about how you can manage your time. The right configuration is the key to better welding. Make sure all of your equipment is ready for use. Protect your station from possible fire hazards.

It also means that you take the time to focus on the steps that lead to welding itself. Measuring your patch is an important skill. This can take some time at first, but saves hours of cleaning and repairs later. Remove half of the metal from a clean metal around the area you want to patch. Stay round to avoid heat build-up that can cause distortion. Check your metal ad. Precision is essential when cutting (pneumatic saws are an advantage here!). Flush seams look better and last better than lap seams.
Measure twice, cut once!
When you place your parts, the assembly ensures that things stay aligned and in place as you work on the rest of the weld. A tactic keeps a room flexible in case you need to move it. Use thumbtacks in different places if you want to keep the parts in place. This remains stable as you fill the solder and also prevents some distortion.

And finally, always pay attention to distortion. Poorly distributed or excessive heat in your metal will cause the metal to warp. Move your soldering point and keep warming up. This reduces distortion, your patches look good, and you save hours of frustration.

Welding is a new skill that is useful for anyone working in a car. It has challenges, but I hope you can see that it doesn't have to be scary or mysterious. I hope that by damaging this MIG welding component, you feel ready to give a welding injection. With a few tips listed here, you're far ahead of most newbies. The ease of modern MIG welding means that with a little advice and practice, you can go through complicated welds in no time.
